Billboard Music Awards are back: Taylor Swift could make history

The holiday season may be in full effect, but one of music’s biggest nights, the 2024 Billboard Music Awards, is less than a month away.
Similar to last year’s ceremony, which was reimagined as an online-only event, this year’s BBMAs will air Thursday, Dec. 12, at 8 p.m. EDT/PDT via Fox, Paramount+ and Amazon’s Fire TV Channels. The multi-distribution broadcast will make the ceremony more accessible to fans nationwide, according to a release.
Actress and comedian Michelle Buteau (“Babes,” “The Circle”) will serve as host. The night will feature “exclusive original performances created by the world’s biggest chart-topping artists, artist interviews and award celebrations taking place from global locations and in the midst of sold-out tours,” per the release.
Also announced Monday were the 2024 BBMA finalists vying for top honors including the top artist award − Zach Bryan, Taylor Swift, Morgan Wallen and Sabrina Carpenter are all up against each other for it. The “Tortured Poets Department” singer and Drake are facing off once more to compete for the most all-time BBMA wins; the two tied last year with a career total of 39 awards.
This year, Bryan leads the BBMA finalists as he’s up for 18 awards with 21 total nods, while Swift is a finalist in 16 categories with 17 entries. Wallen trails close behind with 15 finalist nominations in 13 categories, including five for “I Had Some Help” with Post Malone.

Carpenter, who’s a first-time finalist at the BBMAs, is also up for Top Hot 100 Artist, top streaming songs artist and twice for her viral single “Espresso” for Top Billboard Global 200 song and Top Billboard global song. Other first-timers include Teddy Swims, Tyla, Benson Boone, Shaboozey, Junior H, Chappell Roan, ENHYPEN and The Red Clay Strays.
Country music star Shaboozey is performing from the W Hollywood hotel in Los Angeles, California, with other performers and special guests to be announced soon.

The eligibility dates for this year’s awards correspond with Billboard’s year-end charts tracking period, from Oct. 28, 2023, through Oct. 19, 2024.
